On a normal Lithuania evening, Soviet officials bashed into Lina’s home. After that night Lina and her family’s lives were negatively changed forever. The soldiers claimed that Lina and her family were criminals and filthy pigs. The Soviets smashed their belongings and stuck them onto a small, filthy, train car along with many other strangers. Lina, her mother, and her brother were taken to a work camp where they received little food, and were forced to do many ungodly things. Through all this bad and hate Lina did find some positive. She built relationships with others in the train car and those she spent time with at the camp.

Between Shades of Gray was breath taking. I learned from this book, and thoroughly enjoyed it at the same time. I knew about the devastating story of the Holocaust, but I had no idea that at the same time of the Holocaust 20 million other people died under the wrath of Stalin, the head of the Soviet Union in the 40s and 50s.

Between Shades of Gray is devastating, beautiful, and a page turner all at once. It will make you question your values and rethink what you have. I recommend this book to everyone who needs an eye opener, and a breath taker. Be prepared for a wonderful, heart throbbing novel!
