I love Ruta Sepetys with all my heart. She is a beautiful writer who crafts  incredible characters and phenomenal story lines in the past. (This is historical fiction, in case you didn’t catch that!) I adored Between Shades of Gray, and when I heard about Out of The Easy, I was like the fourth person in line for it at BEA. And oh golly it was worth it.

Josie is the daughter of a prostitute, but wants nothing more than to escape her mother’s world of crime and lies. After graduating from high school, Josie wants to go to college, but she has decided to continue to work in the bookshop she has worked at since age 12, knowing full well a girl like her can’t really go to college. She doesn’t have the money. Then a kind man comes into the store and gets Josie thinking that maybe she can be more than just a prostitute’s daughter who works in a bookshop and cleans the brothel her mother works in. When the kind man is murdered, Josie is determined to figure out what really happened – but then her mother becomes one of the prime suspects, a dangerous man comes to town, just as Josie is applying to Smith… and nothing is as it seems.

AHH THIS BOOK! I couldn’t stop reading it. I read during class *cough cough* especially during physics *cough cough* and stayed up late reading. This book is possibly as good, if not better than Between Shades of Gray. It’s definitely happier. I can guarantee that. The plot line of Out of The Easy is addicting, weaving through New Orleans and Josie’s intriguing life, filled with cute boys and dangerous mobsters, all while Josie is dealing with her own desires for a life beyond what she knows. Any teen can relate to Josie in that way; wanting to grow up and leave home. And the setting! Sepetys is brilliant at making you feel that you’re living in the 1950’s along with Josie.

Ruta is a wonderful writer who crafts characters that are more complex than I could imagine. Josie has layer after layer, with secrets hidden in each, and a new obstacle every chapter. I highly, highly recommend Out of The Easy for anyone, whether you like historical fiction or not. One of the best books of the year so far!
