Holly Black has triumphantly returned to the fairy world! After successful and highly varied outings from magic to vampires to an award-winning creepy ghost story, Black has returned to her fairy roots. Black’s books always lean to the darker side of magic, fantasy, and folktale and her new book is the same, as if the title didn’t give that away.

Like her popular Modern Faerie Tale series, the new book has humans and fae living side by side. In The Darkest Part of the Forest, the faerie magic draws tourists to a small quirky town, home to heroine Hazel, and her brother, Ben. This faerie magic isn’t all rainbows and unicorns, but rather dark, dangerous, and something for which the town’s residents have a deep respect. At the heart of this magic, in the darkest part of the forest, is a horned boy. He is asleep in a glass coffin, and has been for all of Hazel’s life. Until one day the horned boy is gone.

In addition to her life-long love and curiosity for the horned boy, Hazel has always envisioned herself as a knight, a warrior. Things suddenly start to go wrong in Hazel’s town – missing children, murders – and her aspirations of knighthood become reality as she fights against dark magic.

Whoa. I’m going to stop there. I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes modern fantasy with an edge. Or for anyone who appreciates a good story with engaging, enigmatic characters, and a strong mythology. There is nothing “girly” about this fairy story. Holly Black is a fantastic storyteller and I love her unique settings, characters, and twists-and-turns. This book is complex and dark – there is nothing safe about it – and its “on the edge” feeling and mystery carried me through from the very first page.
