Stay Where You Are And Then Leave, though short, makes expert use of every page to connect readers to main character Alfie and his quest to rescue his father. While the action focuses on Albie’s family and neighbors, the ramifications reach far beyond Albie’s street. Despite that small slice of Albie’s world, readers get to see all the different ways war affects people on Albie’s street and beyond. From Alfie’s mother who takes on as much work as she can handle and then some, to all the young men who will never return to their families, to the hospital where Alfie’s father convalesces along with many other veterans suffering from PTSD, it’s clear that this is not just a rousing tale about soldiers at war. This is a story about a boy’s love for his father, and a community struggling to put their lives back together after they were torn apart. A devastating and excellent read. Recommended for fans of The Book Thief, Between Shades of Gray, and How I Live Now.
