When Dan learns that the family business is bankrupt, his dad is gay, and he is moving schools, it is understandable that he isn’t very happy. He combats all this with wit and sarcasm, and I love it. He sets out to not become a total loser at school, while at the same time trying to manage a gigantic crush on the girl next door. The things Dan does to try to catch her eye are outrageous, and one of those things leads to him ending up on the dance planning committee, much to his dismay. But after nearly ruining the dance and a bad haircut, things start looking up for Dan, and life isn’t so bad after all.
I think the author does a superb job keeping an upbeat and funny pace throughout the book, and although there is a little bit of romance sewn into the plot line, it isn’t the focus of the entire book. The book is just the right amount of humor, romance, mystery, and rebellious teenage adventure, perfect for a quick, light read.
Editor’s note: This book comes out this August, but we are taking preorders for it.
