This book just blew me away.
When I met Aisha, and she told me about her book I immediately knew that I would love it. I love stories like this – ones about topics I know absolutely nothing about. And I’d like to say that this book educated me just a bit. (But I want to know more!)
Written in the Stars tells the story of Naila, a senior in high school who is bound for college in the fall. She has a boyfriend (who her parents know nothing about) she’s incredibly in love with, a best friend (who she is barely able to hang out with outside of school), and loving parents. Naila desperately wants a future with Saif, her boyfriend, but her parents will never let that happen – Naila will have an arranged marriage to a man of her parents’ choice. This is what drives the book: Naila’s disagreement with her parents over her future. When her parents find out about Saif, they decide to go on a family “trip” to Pakistan, where they go in search of Naila’s future husband.
Naila’s story is one of love and personal growth. She’s virtually alone in Pakistan with her feelings because she can tell next to no one about Saif. Her dreams of going home are pushed further and further away, and as she is confronted with the reality that she may never go home, Naila has to adjust to her new life. Naila’s emotional growth during this book is incredible – she grows from a teenager girl into a woman through her experiences, but never loses hope.
I adored this book. The writing, the characters, the story – I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. If you haven’t read this book, do it now. You’ll love it.
