I really loved A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall. It really was something completely different from I’m used to reading. It’s a love story about a guy and girl, Gabe and Lea, told from pretty much every point of view other than their own. Everyone knows that they’re perfect for each other except for them.
There are fourteen characters narrating the story and I know that sounds like a lot, but it all fits together. If there were any less, you’d miss part of their story and if there were any more, it would feel unnecessary. Some of the narrators are their best friends and others are random people and things.
There’s the creative writing teacher and her wife that are trying to get them together. Then there are Lea’s roommate and her best friend. A park bench and a squirrel. Gabe’s brother and his best friend. An older waitress and a barista. A Chinese food delivery guy. A bus driver. And two of their creative writing classmates. It may sound like all those characters and points of view could never fit together but they do. They all have one thing in common — they’re all waiting for Lea and Gabe to finally do something and make some sort of move.
I really liked how the story wasn’t rushed. Most people typically don’t fall in love in two weeks. With Lea and Gabe, it took a whole school year for them to come to their senses and get together. It really gives the book a realistic feel to it.
This is Sandy Hall’s first book so far, but I’m excited for more. This is such a cute story and sometimes you need to read things like that for a change.
Any one who likes sweet love stories should definitely read A Little Something Different. Even if you usually wouldn’t read that type, you should still take a look at this one. I think it’s just so heartwarming and adorable that it is impossible to not love this book, no matter who you are.
