Sonia Manzano is the keynote speaker for the 2015 Texas Teen Book Festival
Sonia Manzano got her start in the entertainment business as a teenager. She starred in Godspell on Broadway while a junior in high school. A few years later, her Broadway experience paved the way for her joining the cast of Sesame Street in 1971. Sonia began writing scripts for the show and became a series regular as “Maria”, sharing the screen with one of our favorite monsters, Elmo!
Sonia is known for her support of educational development and literacy of children across the world, but she also advocates for children & teens to follow their dreams. This topic also shines through in her published works. Sonia has written and published several children’s and young reader books that include silly and funny pictures such as No Dogs Allowed. She’s also written two young adult books. The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano is about a Puerto Rican girl trying to break free of her family’s conservative ways until a visit from her grandmother shakes up her family’s world. Sonia’s most recent book, also for young adults, is a memoir called Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx. Set in the Bronx during the 1950’s, this memoir paints a lasting portrait of a girl’s resilience as she grows up to become an inspiration to millions.
We are super excited and honored to have Sonia Manzano, a childhood icon and strong voice in children’s literature, joining this year’s line up for the Texas Teen Book Festival. This is one of many awesome announcements to come about the Texas Teen Book Festival (formerly the Austin Teen Book Festival).
Texas Teen Book Festival is happening on September 26th, 2015 on the campus of St. Edward’s University. It’s one of our favorite events of the year. We’re proud to be co-founders of this festival and love working on it (and of course being there the day of with all of the books!) Don’t miss it!
