A plucky protagonist, long-lost half-siblings, and a cross-country road trip: all the signs tell me this is a great book.
Family is the core of this story. And with family, there’s plenty of anger and sadness to go along with the happiness. Michelle often has to take on the role of the mother and tries her best to keep her family together and safe. The love among Michelle and her sister and brother, and her growing relationship with Leah were both very heartwarming. The way Cass dealt with bullying at school on an emotional level was to me an honest portrayal that didn’t soften any blows. In that same vein, the health and mental issues of the characters were all handled well by LaMarche. I was rooting for the group up to the very end. I felt like I was there with them, experiencing everything from the excitement to the heartbreaks right alongside them in Goldie’s backseat.
Although the time for summer road trips has come to an end, it’s the perfect time to read Don’t Fail Me Now.
