Rick Riordan, sometimes referred to by his readers as “Uncle Rick”, is famous for his mythological series all across the board. From Greek myths, Roman myths, Egyptian myths, and now with his newest series of  Norse mythology called “Magnus Chase and The Gods of Asgard”.

The Sword of Summer,  revolves around the main character Magnus Chase. Magnus is just another homeless 16 year old on the streets of Boston with a not-so-normal reason for ending up there. When memories of his past lead him to explore his mysterious uncle’s house, he begins to get himself wrapped up in the world of Norse gods, magic swords, elves, and prophesies. Well, technically its nine worlds but I’m going to assume we are not Norse gods and goddesses and that we all like “Midgard” (Earth) just fine.

The story is narrated by Magnus, which brings a whole new level of humor to the story and really provides great comic relief during the entire read. He is pretty ignorant to the overall idea of the gods, so as a reader we are always learning new things. Along with insight on a new mythology and the amazing humor Rick Riordan never fails to provide, we also learn many valuable lessons.

“You couldn’t multitask while talking to him. The dialogue required one hundred percent focus. If all conversations were like that, I imagined people wouldn’t say so much stupid garbage.” -Magnus Chase

You definitely see Rick Riordan’s writing style throughout the book. If you have ever read other books by him, you can see the similarities. We have the slightly reluctant main hero, the super smart girl that knows all about the myths and helps the hero, and a few friends of the hero that were sent to protect him undercover until the gods found him. But despite any slight differences, it still portrays the same theme and idea that everyone has a hero inside of them, and that you can change your destiny with the help of friends along the way.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book! There was great character development, plot twists (that I will not mention because Loki might kill me), and lots of action packed adventures. I can also personally relate to many of the characters in the book. Especially since Rick was born and grew up right here in San Antonio, Texas! I would totally read any book by Uncle Rick (if I hadn’t already read every book he’s ever written). I highly encourage you to read this book or any book by Rick Riordan. I guarantee you’ll love it!
