Have you ever wondered what your life would be like if you didn’t do that one thing? If you joined different extracurricular activities or didn’t meet a certain person or never moved to a different state when you were younger. Would you be a completely different person, without having experienced the same events you have up to this point?
Everything That Makes You is a story about exactly that. When Fiona Doyle was five, she got into an accident that led to scarring on the entire right side of her face. For Fiona Doyle, however, that accident never happened. Where Fiona can’t play any contact sports because she might get hit in the face; Fiona is the best high school lacrosse player in the state. Fiona doesn’t have the courage to talk to her crush, Trent, but Fiona is his best friend. A big, underlying “what if?” question is explored as these two go through high school and college.
This book was super cool. I’ve honestly never seen anything like it. It starts out with the two stories being heavily intertwined, but they branch out as the main characters’ decisions influence their lives. I really appreciated the subtle parallels between the two stories and the variations in the characters’ relationships. It’s like reading two books in one, but with the knowledge that both stories are connected in tiny ways. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for some classic YA with a twist.
