The author of the Grisha trilogy, Leigh bardugo has once again blown me away with Six of Crows. Taking place in the same magical world as the Grisha trilogy, this story follows Kaz Brekker, an infamous criminal leader. When Kaz is tasked with an impossible mission to break into the most fortified place on the planet to find a scientist, he must put together an elite crew to accomplish the task. Who better to help him with the impossible than a spy wanting out, a merchants son trying to prove his worth, a gambler needing to pay off debts, a convict hoping for freedom, and a magical Grisha desperate to make up for betrayal.
Leigh bardugo has created one of the most diverse sets of characters I have seen in a YA novel. It has different races, body types, and sexualities. Her characters take on their own life, with their human flaws and inner strong conflict. Even with their questionable morals, I found myself rooting for them full heartedly. Especially Jesper. He was just hilarious.
Along with fabulous characters, Six of Crows had an awesome plot. There weren’t any dull moments, and I completely lost myself in the book. The break in could have been a huge bust, but Leigh Bardugo did it so masterfully that I was left wondering if she was a criminal mastermind. Its romance had a clear point to the plot, but was lovable as well. I am in love with one of the pairs and would read the next book just for them.
Six of Crows was an amazing book that left me desperate to find out what happened next. It has mature themes, so if you’re under 12, maybe wait until you’re older. But for everyone else, definitely put this book at the top of your to-be-read list. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
