On Wednesday, March 28th, Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera revealed the cover for their collaborative novel, What If It’s Us, set to be released October 9th, 2018. I, being a huge fan of both authors, have been waiting for this book with baited breath, and being able to see the cover was a big deal.
The What If It’s Us summary reads:
Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a show-stopping romance when you least expect it.
Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things.
But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?
Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.
Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.
But what if they can’t quite nail a first date . . . or a second first date . . . or a third?
What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work . . . and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?
What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?
But what if it is?
A collaborative YA romance might seem impossible, even with bestselling authors like Becky and Adam behind it, but by alternating chapters and editing together they got it done, and with what I’m sure is ample quality behind it. Becky says, “This was a great opportunity to sort of write for one of your best friends and favorite authors.”
Becky is known for her happier, rom-com style, easily seen in Love, Simon, the movie adaption of her first novel, Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda. Adam’s books often take on a deep and thought-provoking style, bringing in themes of amnesia, suicide, and grief. Both of their books always involve queer main characters, Becky drawing on her experiences as a former clinical psychologist specializing in kids and teens, and Adam drawing on his experience as a gay man.
The cover, nevertheless, is everything I could have expected and more. It’s uncommon that I get so excited about a YA cover, but the fact that it’s from two of my favorite authors and an all-around good looking piece of art makes me extremely interested. Also, being able to see Becky and Adam’s names up there next to each other solidified the fact that this Avengers-esque team up was really happening.
On the topic of having two boys, as Becky describes “blatantly checking each other out” on the cover, Adams says, “I get to proudly say, ‘Yeah, I’m a queer author writing about queer boys, and I’m hoping that other queer boys will see this and that they will be able to take this home and get themselves recognized.’” This quote makes me think that maybe, not only does the title What If It’s Us nod to the characters attempting to insight their own romance, but also recognizes queer readers who wonder if they could have a great love story themselves.
