Review by Zoë

When I first heard about this book, I was immediately drawn to it. One, because of the story it would tell and two, because I love Marie Lu. Marie Lu’s books are fascinating and she is amazing at world building. So when I heard she was writing a historical fiction book about Wolfgang Mozart’s sister and a world they created as children I was like, “Ooooh that sounds really interesting!” I’ve always been interested in history and stories about people from different time periods.

The Kingdom of Back did not disappoint.

The Kingdom of Back is about Wolfgang Mozart’s sister, Nannerl. Nannerl is as gifted as her brother and she too delights audiences with her playing. Her father taught her to play the clavier before he ever taught Wolfgang. But because she is a woman she can only play when she becomes of marrying age. Nannerl hopes to be remembered. But as her brother’s talents grow and the attention directs toward him, she is forced to come to terms with the fact that maybe she will be forgotten… until a stranger from another realm comes and tells her he may be able to help her. As Nannerl learns what this help will cost her, she must decide what matters more, her family or being remembered.

This book had such rich descriptions that you could see, hear, and feel everything. The descriptions of the Kingdom of Back were especially lush and very deep. I wanted to visit it so badly. Can I tell you more about the Kingdom of Back, you ask? No, because that would be a spoiler–but it is amazing.

This book had such rich descriptions that you could see, hear, and feel everything.”

Nannerl was a very interesting character. I could relate to her struggles with being remembered. I would hate to be in that type of situation where I had something I wanted to share with the world but couldn’t. I also related to the close relationship between Wolfgang and Nannerl, because I have a close relationship with my sisters.

If you like historical fiction I think you should definitely try this book out. Even if you don’t like historical fiction, it is very different from a lot in the genre. It has a lot of fantasy elements that I think anyone would enjoy. For fans of Marie Lu: this book does not disappoint. Don’t be fooled by how different it is from the rest of her books. This is just as good.
